US Ambassador: US Recognizes the Role of the People of Nagorno Karabakh in Determining its Future

In an interview with the state-run Armenpress news agency on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Armenia and the United States, US Ambassador Lynne Tracy voiced support for the Armenian government’s democratic and economic reform agenda. She also stated that the United States is convinced that a comprehensive, negotiated, and lasting settlement, regarding the Artsakh (Nagorno Karabakh) conflict, is essential to a peaceful, democratic, and prosperous future in the South Caucasus region.

“Certainly, the United States’ position is that the issue of Nagorno-Karabakh’s status remains unresolved,” stressing that there is no military solution to the conflict.

“The right of peoples to self-determination is a key factor, but it is not the only internationally recognized principle for achieving this goal, and in the context of a comprehensive settlement of the conflict, the United States, as Co-Chair of the OSCE Minsk Group, recognizes the role of the people of Nagorno-Karabakh in determining its future.”

Ambassador Tracey stressed that the United States encourages the continuation of peace talks between Armenia and Azerbaijan, and is ready to engage with bilateral countries. “Let me emphasize that there is no military solution to the conflict. The United States remains committed to building a peaceful, democratic, and prosperous future in the South Caucasus. This includes the use of direct communication mechanisms to find comprehensive solutions to all outstanding issues and to normalize relations by signing a comprehensive peace agreement. The United States stands ready to support these efforts by Armenia and Azerbaijan, including as co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, to assist those countries in achieving a comprehensive peace,” she said.

In terms of Armenia, the Ambassador stated “We are committed to continue helping the Armenian people build a future based on shared democratic values, a path they chose in 2018 and to which they recommitted themselves during the 2021 parliamentary election.”

During the interview the Ambassador talked about her diplomatic mission in Armenia, the past and present experience, her impressions on the country, the agenda of the Armenian-American relations, as well as regional and international developments.

She also touched upon the general dynamics of the Armenia-U.S. relations over the past 30 years, their development prospects, sharing important information about the current development of the bilateral ties.

Ambassador Tracy said “the U.S. Embassy is committed to supporting Armenia’s democratic and economic reform agenda and partnering with Armenia to achieve its goals”.
