ACA Welcomes Introduction of Armenian American Cultural Heritage Act
Rep. Mike Carey’s Legislation Would Preserve Armenian American History, Recognize the Legacy of the Armenian Genocide, and Expand Access to Historical Collections at the Library of Congress
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Armenian Council of America (ACA) welcomes the introduction of the Armenian American Cultural Heritage Act (H.R. 10812) by U.S. Representative Mike Carey (R-OH), legislation that would strengthen the preservation, recognition, and accessibility of Armenian American history through the Library of Congress.
Introduced on October 15, 2026, the legislation directs the Library of Congress to identify, catalog, and preserve historical materials documenting the Armenian American experience, with particular emphasis on Armenian immigration to the United States following the Armenian Genocide. The bill also provides for the digitization of these collections, subject to available funding and copyright law, and their incorporation into the Library’s educational resources, expanding access for students, educators, researchers, and future generations.
“Armenian American history is inseparable from the broader American story. From the survivors of the Armenian Genocide who found refuge in the United States to the generations who helped shape our nation’s economic, cultural, and civic life, our community’s contributions deserve a permanent place in the American historical record,” said Taniel Koushakjian, ACA Executive Director of Government Relations. “Congressman Carey’s legislation represents an important step toward ensuring that this history is preserved, accessible, and understood by future generations. We commend his leadership in recognizing both the enduring legacy of the Armenian Genocide and the contributions of Armenian Americans to our country.”
The legislation also coincides with the United States’ 250th anniversary, directing the Library of Congress to host an exhibition highlighting Armenian American communities, culture, and history before the end of 2026. The proposed exhibition would provide an opportunity to recognize the Armenian American experience as part of the nation’s semiquincentennial commemoration.
The Armenian Council of America commends Congressman Carey for introducing this legislation and for recognizing the importance of preserving Armenian American heritage within one of the nation’s foremost cultural and historical institutions.
