YEREVAN (RFE\/RL) \u2014 Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan called for \nincreased U.S. assistance to Armenia noting that radical reforms have \nbeen implemented by his government when he met with eight members of the\n U.S. House of Representatives in Yerevan on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The U.S. congressional delegation comprised David Price, the chairman of the House Democracy Partnership, and other members of the bipartisan commission tasked with supporting legislatures in emerging democracies. It met with Armenian parliament speaker Ararat Mirzoyan on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Pashinyan told the visiting American lawmakers that boosting \nArmenia\u2019s relations with the United States is one of his \nadministration\u2019s foreign policy priorities. According to a statement by \nthe prime minister\u2019s office, he briefed them on political and economic \nreforms launched in the country after last year\u2019s \u201cvelvet revolution.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNikol\n Pashinyan emphasized that his government is taking consistent steps to \nstrengthen the institutional and economic power of democracy and expects\n the support of our international partners, including the United \nStates,\u201d said the statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe Congress members assured of \ntheir willingness to assist Armenia in promoting democracy, implementing\n economic reforms and strengthening the Armenian-American friendship,\u201d \nit added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Speaking in the Armenian parliament late last month, \nPashinyan complained about Washington\u2019s \u201czero reaction\u201d to democratic \nchange in his country. He seemed unhappy with the fact that there has \nbeen no significant increase in U.S. economic assistance to Yerevan \nsince he came to power a year ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The U.S. ambassador to Armenia,\n Lynne Tracy, responded to the criticism when she spoke to RFE\/RL\u2019s \nArmenian service on Monday. Tracy, who accompanied the U.S. lawmakers \nduring their meetings in Yerevan, argued that the U.S. has provided over\n $2 billion in aid to Armenia since 1992 and is committed to more such \nassistance.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
