Schiff vows Senate oversight of targeting of community he has represented in Congress for more than two decades<\/em><\/h3>\n

WASHINGTON, D.C.\u00a0\u2013\u00a0U.S. Senator Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) released the following\u00a0statement\u00a0today\u00a0in response to\u00a0Administrator for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services\u00a0Dr.\u00a0Mehmet\u00a0Oz\u2019s indiscriminate\u00a0targeting<\/a>\u00a0of the Armenian\u00a0American\u00a0community\u00a0this week in Los Angeles County:<\/p>\n

\u201cDr. Oz\u2019s\u00a0demonization of\u00a0Armenian Americans\u00a0and targeting of\u00a0their\u00a0small businesses\u00a0is\u00a0racist\u00a0and must end. Attacking fraud does not require bigoted attacks on an entire community.<\/p>\n

\u201cCalifornia\u2019s Armenian American community\u00a0is an\u00a0indispensable part of\u00a0the fabric of our\u00a0Golden\u00a0state. After\u00a0representing the largest community of Armenian Americans anywhere in the country in the House for more than two decades,\u00a0I have seen\u00a0firsthand\u00a0the\u00a0many\u00a0countless contributions Armenian Americans have made to our country. I\u00a0condemn\u00a0this\u00a0reckless\u00a0demonization of an entire community\u00a0by\u00a0Dr. Oz, which has already seen businesses suffer\u00a0through\u00a0bigoted attacks on their operations.<\/p>\n

\u201cI welcome any serious effort to combat waste, fraud and abuse \u2014 and there is plenty to be found amidst the billions being thrown at ICE and CBP right now. But instead of\u00a0tackling the challenges Americans are actually facing, including access to affordable health care, or addressing fraud in\u00a0a\u00a0constructive and serious fashion, Dr. Oz\u00a0is\u00a0baselessly targeting an entire community\u00a0with\u00a0indiscriminate and\u00a0unsubstantiated claims. He is painting his\u00a0accusations with a brush laden with racist historical tropes\u00a0and stereotypes,\u00a0making it\u00a0clear\u00a0there\u00a0is no limit to\u00a0this\u00a0Administration\u2019s\u00a0appetite for distortion of the\u00a0facts in service of a hateful agenda.\u00a0We all support rooting out fraud\u00a0\u2013 but the rule of law requires that it be based on evidence, not language, culture, or ethnicity.\u00a0These attacks\u00a0must end.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the coming weeks,\u00a0I will\u00a0work with my federal and state partners to conduct\u00a0oversight\u00a0and an independent review of this\u00a0illegal racial profiling\u00a0of Californians, and I will continue to stand with them\u00a0against these attacks. I will not tolerate Dr. Oz or any other member of the Administration\u00a0targeting our communities or\u00a0taking steps to prevent or limit access to health care for Californians.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
