{"id":2812,"date":"2022-11-17T12:01:48","date_gmt":"2022-11-17T20:01:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.armeniancouncil.org\/ACA\/?p=2812"},"modified":"2022-11-18T19:05:10","modified_gmt":"2022-11-19T03:05:10","slug":"senator-menendez-u-s-assistance-to-azerbaijan-is-inexcusable-and-morally-repugnant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.armeniancouncil.org\/ACA\/senator-menendez-u-s-assistance-to-azerbaijan-is-inexcusable-and-morally-repugnant\/","title":{"rendered":"Senator Menendez: U.S. Assistance to Azerbaijan is Inexcusable and Morally Repugnant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, says the U.S. assistance to Azerbaijan is inexcusable and is morally repugnant.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Delivering opening remarks at the Committee hearing entitled\u00a0\u201cAssessing U.S. Policy in the Caucasus\u201d, Bob Menendez said \u201cthis region is an ancient crossroads with deep geopolitical importance as a bridge between the West and the heart of Asia\u201d. But he added that \u201ctoo often, dictators with imperial aspirations have victimized those living in the South Caucasus\u201d, mentioning the Turkish-supported Azerbaijani aggression against Armenia as an example.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIn 2020, Azerbaijan\u2019s war uprooted close to one-hundred-thousand Armenians from their homes in Nagorno-Karabakh. Sixty-five hundred people died. Today, Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh, the land they know as Artsakh, still face an acute humanitarian crisis. Including threats of ethnic cleansing and chronic shortages of water, energy, healthcare, and food. That is why I\u2019ve pushed for more humanitarian assistance to help the victims\u2014both in Armenia and in Nagorno-Karabakh\u201d, the Senator said, adding that because the U.S. humanitarian response has been insufficient, in his view.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cBut incredibly \u2026 we are still sending security assistance to Azerbaijan.\u00a0How on earth can the United States justify sending any kind of support\u2014security or otherwise\u2014to a regime in Baku?\u201d\u00a0the Chairman said. \u201cIt\u2019s inexcusable. I personally think it is morally repugnant. And it makes a mockery of the FREEDOM Support Act.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cSection 907 of this act is meant to ban security assistance to Azerbaijan until Azerbaijan is quote \u2018taking demonstrable steps to cease all blockades and other offensive uses of force against Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh.\u2019 And yet the Department of State has waived section 907 over and over again. It requested $600,000 for fiscal year 2022 to provide Azerbaijan with International Military Education and Training.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Suffice it to say that I am strongly opposed to having any aid go to a fighting force known for war crimes and aggression against a neighbor state\u201d, Bob Menendez added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He stated that months before a video caught Azerbaijani forces killing unarmed Armenian soldiers in cold-blood. \u201cMonths before reports surfaced of Azerbaijani soldiers sexually assaulting and mutilating an Armenian female soldier\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Senator stated that the U.S. assistance and training has impacted Azerbaijan\u2019s military balance with Armenia. \u201cSo I want you to give us all the details Congress has asked for so we can assess any assistance the U.S. provides to Baku.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Finally I want to be clear\u2014I still have hopes for a lasting peace in the region\u201d, he said, expressing hope to hear from the attendees about what more they could be doing for peace in the Caucasus and specifically following the recent attack on Armenia\u201d, he noted.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe people of this region don\u2019t want to live under the threat of violence.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">They don\u2019t want autocratic rule, imposed on them by the barrel of a gun.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">No one wants to live that way. Not you. Not me.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Not the Armenian people.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Not the people of Nagorno-Karabakh.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">They deserve to live in peace. They deserve freedom and security.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And that means ensuring that a peace deal does not lead to ethnic cleansing for the Armenia population of Nagorno-Karabakh.\u00a0It means tackling the needs of the humanitarian crisis there.
