WASHINGTON \u2013 U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee,<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.)<\/strong>\u00a0today released the following statement applauding the Library of Congress (LOC) for making the determination that the Armenian Genocide will be categorized as \u201cArmenian Genocide\u201d rather than \u201cArmenian massacres\u201d in its catalog records. This determination follows a letter from leading Senate Democrats in support of the formal proposal to classify\u00a0the Ottoman Empire\u2019s systematic killing of 1,500,000 Armenians as a genocide.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe applaud the Library of Congress\u2019s decision, which reflects both scholarly and Congressional consensus. This determination is another victory for those who value the truth and believe in the importance of the words \u2018Never Again.\u2019\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAfter the Senate unanimously approved Senator Menendez\u2019s resolution recognizing the facts of the Armenian Genocide, and the House passed a similar resolution with a strong bipartisan majority, the Trump administration finds itself increasingly alone in its refusal to recognize the historical reality of the Armenian Genocide. We call on President Trump to end his deference to President Erdogan and to join Congress in saying genocide is genocide.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

On October 14th<\/sup>, Senator Menendez and Leader Schumer led a letter to Librarian of Congress Dr. Carla D. Hayden with Senators Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Cory Booker (D-N.J.), Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Ed Markey (D-Mass.), Jack Reed (D-R.I.), and Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) that called for the Library of Congress\u2019 records on the Armenian Genocide to reflect both scholarly and Congressional consensus. \u00a0A copy of the letter may be found\u00a0here<\/a>.<\/p>\n
